Bartaman (বর্তমান) newspaper is an Indian Bengali language daily newspaper published in Kolkata by Bartaman Pvt. Ltd. Apart from the Kolkata edition, the newspaper has four other simultaneous editions, published daily from four major towns of West Bengal - Siliguri, Burdwan, Malda and Midnapore, is the second-most widely read Bengali newspaper in India after Anandabazar Patrika. The newspaper was founded by Barun Sengupta (1934-2008), a journalist of Calcutta in December 1984. Mr. Sengupta breathed his last on 19 June 2008 at Kolkata.
The newspaper was founded on 7 December 1984 by Barun Sengupta, a former Anandabazar Patrika journalist. Sengupta died on 19 June 2008 at Kolkata. Since April 2002, Bartaman Patrika has published an online version.
Bartaman's main competitor is Anandabazar Patrika, published since 1922. Bartaman holds second position after Anandabazar Patrika in West Bengal, by readership and circulation; its daily circulation is roughly about 40% of that of Anandabazar Patrika.
